Software Engineer, Backend

Folio is hiring a remote Backend Software Engineer to help build the infrastructure behind B2B commerce in hospitality, starting with hotels. The role focuses on server-side development, API design, data modeling, and building systems that support payments, search, and other operational workflows. It suits experienced engineers who have worked on early-stage products, are comfortable taking on varied responsibilities, and can balance product and business needs while keeping quality high. Strong experience with Ruby on Rails or Node.js, Postgres, AWS, Docker, CI/CD, Terraform, and scalable system design is expected.

COME BUILD THE RAILS OF B2B COMMERCE IN HOSPITALITY, STARTING WITH HOTELS WHAT EXCITES YOU - You’re someone who has worked on early-stage teams, perhaps even as a founder, and love wearing multiple hats (to a healthy extent). - You've seen products come to life from just a spark of an idea, and even if things don't quite pan out, you're motivated by the process of making something from nothing. - You want to work on software that has real, tangible value to deliver to the people who need it, even if the solution can be basic or 'unsexy' sometimes. - You're an expert at prioritization and time management who can gracefully adapt to new facts on the fly as you make tradeoffs between customer and business needs. - You're focused on quality, not quantity. WHAT EXCITES US - You have 8+ years of hands-on experience as a senior contributor to teams that have proved they can ship great products. - You're a backend specialist with deep expertise in server-side technologies (Ruby on Rails / Node.js / Postgres) and API design. - You have solid object-oriented design and programming skills with experience architecting solutions for complex data-intensive systems. - You have hands-on experience with DevOps practices, infrastructure automation, and cloud deployment (AWS, Docker, CI/CD pipelines) - You understand system scalability, performance optimization, monitoring, and have experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform). - You have experience building software that enables money movement with a penchant for digitizing historically paper-based processes. - You have experience with data modeling, database optimization, and ensuring data integrity in financial systems. - You have experience building and maintaining search infrastructure, ideally with Elasticsearch or similar technologies. - You try to give back to the development community as a contributor to Open Source Software projects or other pro-bono avenues. WORKING AT FOLIO - Folio is a Ruby on Rails app with Typescript Node.js automations and Elasticsearch deployed to AWS. - Our engineering team meets daily for standup (except Friday) and otherwise keep meetings to a minimum. - We're a remote-first company. Quarterly, we travel to work together in-person and stay with one of our hotel partners. - For the most part, we rely on Google Meet, GitHub, Linear, Notion, and Slack to make decisions and get things done day-to-day.
